I've seen several posts in the last few days where people have used the word "loose" when they mean "lose". If you have something and then it gets lost or goes away and you no longer have it, the word is, "lose". "I will lose 20 pounds." "I don't want to lose your friendship". "Can you lose your salvation?" If you turn something free, like letting your dog out of a cage, or if something is less than tight, the word is "loose". " "I set my dog run loose all over the yard." "I must be losing weight--my jeans are loose." Just thought I'd correct you all at once instead of taking lots of threads off-topic.

While not quite the same thing, I tend to mistake with homonyms in threads. I will posts things like thrown when I mean throne, or more likely hear as opposed to here, etc. Also reminds me of PC when a thread was archived, she was say that it was achieved. Then there was when the Personally For You folder started, for the first few months I kept misreading it as Personality for you instead.

Thank you, Lisa...I see this everywhere lately and it drives me nuts! When did we as Americans stop caring about correct spelling and grammar?

I was wondering if anyone was going to reply to my thread! :) Thanks, guys. Now I don't feel so ignored.

Here's another one: your betrothed, your husband-to-be, is your "fiance" not your "finance". (seen it SO many times and had to restrain myself from correcting for fear of breaching TOS) Now, getting engaged and married might make you more financially stable, BUT he's your fiance, not your finance.

That one's easy, since it has the word "define" in it. Just like "ridiculous". If you remember that it's related to "ridicule", then you won't spell it "rediculous", thus making yourself look, well, you know.

Oh and if you want to use the French for "there you are" or "there it is" (and I really have no idea why Americans want to do this anyway!) it's VOILA not VIOLA! A viola is a stringed instrument, a bit like a violin.

Don't get me started on the misuses of 'then' and 'than'.

ORIGINAL: manda59 Well here's another one I just saw. It's "wreaking havoc" not "reeking havoc" (unless it's something to do with being very smelly!!!) Interesting, cause I usually say "wrecking havoc" I too, at my age, find myself mixing up words, like then and than, etc. At least I am old enough now I can blame it on my age.

I might have, I don't know! Lol! But if I did, I'm sure I'll never confess to it. Most of the time my typos aren't out of ignorance, though--just failure to read through my posts before I hit "submit". For example, I just made a post where I went back and added in a couple of words to a sentence, making the subject a compound subject. However, I neglected to change the verb to the plural form and submitted it. I actually noticed that and went back and edited it, but sometimes I don't notice until someone quotes my post to reply to it. Then it's too late to fix!
